August 8, 2016

Dear Fellow Members,
Our golf course has been open for ten months since the primary work was completed in the Turfgrass Enhancement Project.  Most construction projects take at least one year to mature and we are well on our way to achieving that for our golf course.  We still have some small areas in the rough we will be sodding.  The golf course (including two practice holes, three driving ranges, and three short game areas) is maturing as planned.  As this happens we are regularly fine-tuning our best practices to provide great playing surfaces for the Membership of Virginia to enjoy.
Each and every day our golf course is set up for play prior to Members and Guests enjoying the facility.  Our staff begins daily maintenance at 6:00am every day of the year, with most of them off the course by 2:00pm.  In the early hours of each day there are a number of tasks that take place to ensure your enjoyment of the golf course.  Many of the tasks are listed here. On any given day there may be additional tasks, depending on weather, special events, or other variables.
·         Mow greens
·         Mow tees
·         Mow fairways
·         Mow approaches
·         Mow green surrounds
·         Mow intermediate rough
·         Mow primary rough
·         Change cups
·         Tee service, including moving tee markers, cleanup, and detailing
·         Rake bunkers
·         Spray fertilizers, herbicides, and plant protectants (note that it is important for these to dry prior to golfers reaching the green so they do not track the spray to other parts of the course)
The first 45 minutes of each day are critical.  During that time the aforementioned tasks begin, so there will be no interference with play and with the work that needs to be accomplished.  Workers begin on holes 1-3 along with the practice green, and then leapfrog to the next set of 4-5 holes to stay ahead of play.  They already struggle to stay ahead and if play would commence too early, efficiency and quality would be sacrificed.
We have decided to add a coworker to assist with detail work before play.  This coworker will be specifically tasked to ensure the features on each hole are cared for, as well as to repair ball marks on weekends. This will increase efficiency and improve course conditions.  We are looking forward to this coworker starting so we can continue to work towards our goal of having a wonderfully manicured golf course.
We work diligently to operate within the City of Long Beach regulations and noise ordinances (Municipal Code Title 8 – Health and Safety, Chapter 8.80 Noise).  This limits the operation of certain pieces of equipment early in the morning or late at night (before 7:00am on weekdays and before 8:00am on weekends).  Some of our equipment is electric and we try to avoid areas of the course where homes are nearby, in accordance with the noise ordinance.  We begin daily maintenance at 6:00am every day of the year.
In order to spread play out during the summer months (May 1 – October 1) the first tee will now open at 6:45am on weekends, unless there is a delay due to weather or necessary extra maintenance.  As always, we want to be prudent with our course care.  We still intend for the staff to stay ahead of play and operate within city regulations.  Please allow our staff to move on so they can work in a safe and efficient manner.  To raise the level of maintenance, the golf course will continue to open at 7:30am Tuesday through Friday and 10:00am on Monday.  During the winter months (October 2 – April 30) the first tee will open at 7:00am on weekends.  This will allow Virginia Country Club to continue with its policy of no starting times, having an open first tee, and improving the condition of our golf course.
As always, please contact us with any questions.
